120 days protest in Khabarovsk: trends and perspectives, Khabarovsk, Russia
Mass protest’s riots in Khabarovsk have begun since July 11, 2020 in support of the regional governor, Sergei Furgal, arrested by the Kremlin decision. During July-August about 30-35 thousand of people took part in every protest action. In September-November the estimated number of protesters is about 2-5 thousand in every action. This is the longest protest action in modern Russian history.

During the riot a local protest symbolic language was elaborated.

The main slogans of the protest are: “Freedom to Sergey Furgal”, “Putin to resign”, “Wake up cities, this is trouble with our homeland”. At the same time the main part of protest symbolic – flags, posters, flyers - is associated with Soviet Union. In July-August the relationship of Soviet (red flags), Russian (tricolors) and regional (green-blue-white flags) was about 10-20-70 (%), but in September-November it was changed to 40-10-50 (%).

It may indicate (i) association in collective imagination about social justice with a collective myth about Soviet Union and (ii) accented localism of the protesters.

Therefore, it makes sense to assume that in the case of a victory, the protests will lead not to the development of a “democratic local Russian republic”, but to the creation of a local analogue of the LDPR (“Luhansk & Donetsk People’s Republics”).
