Fashafuyeh, Tehran

At Mar 19 a group of political prisoners in Greater Tehran Prison (Fashafuyeh) have gone on a hunger strike in protests to the government’s intentional refusal to take the necessary measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus among prisoners. “They are burying us alive,” - wrote the prisoners in an open letter in which they declared their hunger strike, - “a number of people died in this prison due to coronavirus”.

Parsilon Prison, Khorramabad

March 19, 2020, prisoners at the Parsilon Prison in Khorramabad (western Iran), who were at risk of coronavirus infection, rebelled, disarmed the guards, and escaped. Prison guards had opened fire on about 250 fleeing inmates and killed several of them. A number of prisoners ignited fires and blocked the road to prevent the forces from chasing them. The IRGC is searching for the inmates across the city of Khorramabad and in the surrounding areas and has set up checkpoints in many locations. Officials have established martial law in Khorramabad and arrested several the locals following the riot in the Parsilon Prison and the successful escape of many inmates. The Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) have launched house-to-house searches in nearby villages in further attempts to apprehend the fleeing prisoners. The locals of Khorramabad have opened their homes to the fleeing prisoners, and many have helped them flee by driving them out of town.

Tabriz, northwest Iran

Inmates of wings 7 and 9 in a prison of Tabriz, northwest Iran, facing the threat of being infected with coronavirus, launched a riot on Thursday afternoon local time, March 26. Units of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) stationed at the Tabriz prison opened fire on the inmates, leaving a number of the prisoners wounded.

Saqqez, Kurdistan Province

Inmates of Saqqez prison in Kurdistan Province, western Iran, launched a riot on Friday afternoon local time, March 27, protesting refusal by authorities of the inhumane mullahs’ regime to release the prisoners despite the ongoing coronavirus crisis engulfing the entire country. About 80 inmates were able to flee the facility following clashes with units of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and prison guards.

Inmates in Mahabad prison located in northwest Iran launched a riot on Saturday, March 28, and many were able to flee the facility. This riot was launched as inmates were protesting regime authorities’ refusal to release prisoners despite the ongoing coronavirus epidemic across the country. This riot led to clashes between inmates and prison guards and gunfire was heard well into the night.

Adel Abad Prison, Shiraz, south-central Iran

Inmates in Adel Abad Prison of Shiraz, a major city in south-central Iran, launched a riot on Sunday night local time, March 29. Reports indicate a large number of prisoners are infected with coronavirus and authorities have not been providing any medical care or necessary supplies. Many inmates have been able to flee this prison, reports indicate, and various local sources are reporting hearing gunfire from the vicinity of Adel Abad Prison. In Shiraz, the intersection leading to the prison, the district of Adel Abad, Paramount and Mianrud was completely blocked by security forces to prevent the prisoners from escaping. Further reports indicate the prison was completely encircled by security forces and gunfire continuing well into the night.

Tabriz Central Prison, northwest Iran

Inmates of wards 12 and 15 in Tabriz Central Prison, located in northwest Iran, launched a protest rally on Monday night local time, March 30, after reports broadcast by the regime’s state TV claiming other than dangerous prisoners all inmates in this facility have been released. The inmates in these two wards were heard shouting in one voice: “We are not dangerous and yet we are in jail” and “Shame on you! Shame on you!”. One source said the atmosphere in this facility is very tense and inmates could be heard protesting and shouting, “Shame on you!” during a phone call. Further reports indicate that the families of the inmates at Sheyban prison gathered in front of the facility on Tuesday night and demanded authorities to release their loved ones. The guards responded by opening fire and shooting tear gas at the protesters. Other videos show 30 ambulances being shuttled into the facility. According to some reports, the guards have murdered several prisoners during the riot.

Urmia, northwest Iran

In Urmia, northwest Iran, regime authorities launched a vicious attack against inmates of this city’s prison on Tuesday night local time, March 31. Reports indicate the attack took place after a number of the inmates intended to launch a riot, yet authorities had previously learned of their intentions. Following this attack, the Urmia prison authorities pulled out eight death row inmates from wards 14 and 15, dragging them outside and transferred them to the prison courtyard. Units of the anti-riot guard forces initially blindfolded these inmates, chained their feet and cuffed their hands behind their backs. All eight inmates were transferred to an unknown location.

Yazd Central Prison, central Iran

More than 1,000 inmates of Yazd Central Prison in central Iran held a rally on Wednesday morning local time, April 1, protesting the threat of coronavirus spreading in the facility, the authorities’ refusal to provide even temporary leave, and forcing them to participate in mass prayers and religious ceremonies. This gathering was held in the prison courtyard and authorities responded by dispatching security units to launch a ruthless attack against the inmates, leaving at least five prisoners wounded as a result. Reports indicate inmates of wards 6 and 8 held this gathering in the prison courtyard, and authorities ordered the prison’s security guards to launch a vicious attack with batons. The angry inmates showed resistance and responded by breaking the ward’s windows. Units of anti-riot guards were then ordered to station inside and in areas adjacent to the facility.
