Religious protests in Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Bosnia and Serbia, Dec 28, 2019
On December 28-30, after prayers at the Serbian Orthodox Church churches, hundreds of people in cities in north and southwestern Montenegro started protests against the adoption of a law on religion and the legal status of religious communities. In the capital of Podgorica, protesters held a rally at the Christmas Market square in the city center and blocked some central roads. A protest march and road blocking were held in Herceg Novi, Niksic, Plevla, Beran, and Bielo Pole. Police tried disperse protests using tear gas. Rallies in support of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro were held in Kumanovo (Northern Macedonia). In the Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina), supporters of Serbian Orthodox Church rally in Trebinje and other cities. Trebinje residents also organized a picket at the border crossing with Montenegro. Also the veteran Serb organizations support the Serbian Orthodox Church in the action. Local sources are reporting the next riots preparing in the coming days.
