Local gangs are the significant driver of violence and source of conflict in Afghanistan. Usually the leaders of local gangs are the former personnel of local militia and security corps fired through the corruption, which involve into criminal activity local poorest people and the representatives of the most oppressed local ethnic and religious minorities.

Gang’s structure is flexible, and its functions are stable and dependent on local production distribution. Gangsters' visual representation and their behavior are completely different both from governmental security officers and from the militants/terrorists.

Deh Sabz Gang involved in extortion, land theft and "coal taxing" (extortion of coal transports through their territory under excuse of providing safety). This gang includes about 20 gunmen leaded by Gul Muhammad and Haji Zaman. They operate under the protection of member of Afghan Parliament Hezb-e-Islami representative Alhaj Allah Gul Mujahid, accused of corruption and numerous standoffs with law enforcement.

Khushal Khan Mena gang involved in robberies, kidnappings, extortions and car theft. They operate in Paghman district.

Rasikh Group operates in western Wardak province. They are involved in weapons smuggling, bribery, robberies and murders. They are headed by a former militia officer (brother of acting security officer Mahdi Rasikh) and operate also as the informal militia forces, under the banner of "public uprising forces".

Panshir gang operates in northern Kabul, involved in robberies, kidnappings, extortions and car theft.

Criminal legend Ghulam Sakhi, also known as Americaee (American), former police officer accused in corruption, involved in robberies, kidnappings and attacks on the security forces, many years operated in Daikundi province has been detained.

Local gangsters, especially young, like to make romantic pictures with heroic posing and weapons.
